To NYT’s credit, it has been out in front in investigating Congressman Charlie Rangel’s misdeeds.

Today, columnist Gail Collins’ sharp wit drives the point home: “Whenever a powerful committee chairman has so many problems that you need a timeline to keep all the allegations straight, he is a liability. When those problems
revolve around things like failure to pay taxes, it is not a good plan to have him be in charge of tax policy.”
With so many illegal sublets of rent-controlled apartments, it is hard to convince those tenants to stop subletting when a United States Congressman holds down four rent-stabilized apartments in open defiance of rent regulation law.
In order to fight corruption, either at the most granular level, or the highest reaches of power, we need both transparency and accountability (click here for the connection among Ikea, multifamily developers, and the banking system). With Rangel’s record now out in the open, we have more transparency. Good citizens should now demand accountability.
